What was done
A project that recompiles The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (USA) into native code using the snes-recomp engine, enabling widescreen support, faster text, and externalized translation capabilities without distributing game assets.
The alttp-recomp repository provides a profile and custom C code to recompile The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (USA) into native code using the snes-recomp engine. The project does not contain the original ROM or game assets; users must provide their own legally obtained ROM, which is used locally to build the executable. The repository includes scripts for building, testing, and packaging, alongside C modules that implement features such as widescreen support with black borders, accelerated text speed, and text/menu translation via external files. Claude Sonnet 5.5 is credited as a co-author on multiple commits, assisting with the implementation of widescreen logic, text dumping, menu translation, and repository documentation. Known limitations include two functions (01:CA17, 08:A8E3) that remain as stubs, lack of PPU interlacing emulation, and deviations from exact hardware cycle timing.
Reproduce it
Clone the repository and run `play.bat` with a valid `alttp_usa.sfc` ROM placed in the `roms/` directory. The system will build the game locally using the snes-recomp engine.
