Revived local control of a Smarter Coffee machine in Home Assistant, with Claude Code

What was done

gtgaute integration talks to a first generation Smarter Coffee machine on TCP and UDP port 2081 with push updates and no cloud, built by Claude Code on the machine protocol research.

First generation Smarter Coffee machines are little more than an ESP8266 listening on TCP and UDP port 2081. gtgaute rebuilt a Home Assistant integration for them with Claude Code doing the protocol research, the integration code, the tests and a Wi-Fi setup tool, all tested against a real machine on firmware 22. It is local only: no cloud and no vendor app.

How it was done

The integration stands on earlier protocol work (Sergiy Maysak integration, the iBrew description and Simone Margaritelli 2016 reverse engineering) but the code is new and written for current Home Assistant, with a config flow, push updates and automatic reconnection. protocol.py documents every message, the 0x7e tail byte, and payloads for cups, strength, keep warm and grind settings, and the tests replay frames captured from a real machine. tools/smarter_wifi.py repeats the app Wi-Fi provisioning so a machine can rejoin a network without the discontinued first generation app.

Results

The machine appears in Home Assistant with state, water level, carafe presence, not-enough-water, cups, keep warm, strength and grind selects, hotplate and brew controls, with readable errors instead of silent failures when the machine refuses a command. The brew action takes explicit cups, strength, keep warm and grind settings. Claude Code made the protocol research, the integration, the tests and the Wi-Fi tool, and it has only been tested on one machine so far. Licensed Apache 2.0.
