What was done
volstants directed Claude Code and Codex to recompile the PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus to C++, with a custom renderer and runtime. All 16 colossus fights pass an automated scenario harness.
volstants built a native Windows port of Shadow of the Colossus (PS2, PAL) by statically recompiling its code with PS2Recomp. The README says every line of code, tool and document was written by AI coding agents, Claude through Claude Code and ChatGPT/Codex, while a human directed the work and played the builds.
How it was done
The game's MIPS R5900 code, including its relocated kernel, manager and game-core modules, is translated to C++ ahead of time. The vector unit programs are recompiled too, and the I/O processor modules run in an emulated R3000. A custom OpenGL 4.6 renderer reproduces the PS2 graphics rules in fragment shaders. PCSX2 served only as a reference to compare memory, graphics output and timing during development. The tools accept only the exact PAL v1.00 disc image and check its hashes.
Results
Per the README, the game boots and plays through the intro, riding, climbing and fighting. All 16 colossus fights pass an automated scenario harness, and the early colossi were also played by hand. Heavy scenes hold 60 fps on a Ryzen 5 5500 with an RTX 3060, where the console often ran at 20 to 30 fps. Known issues remain, such as an occasional black frame and imperfect audio. The repository contains no game data, and it is a fan project.
