Reverse engineered an LG TV slow Plex app and built a native Rust client that loads 10x faster

LG webOS 4.0+ television (Plex app stack): Chromium gone, a Plex wall at 60 fps.

What was done

The interface draws straight on the GPU at 60 fps, video plays on the TV own decoder, and daily use proved it on a 2019 set, with Claude Code in the loop.

PlxNative is a fast, unofficial Plex client for LG webOS televisions. The official Plex app is a Chromium web page, and the author found a poster wall stutter while the TV hardware was fine, so the browser was thrown away. The project found its way to the site through a reddit r/ClaudeCode writeup of using Claude Code to reverse engineer the television, and its commit log carries Claude Opus 5.5 co-author trailers.

How it was done

The work digs into the closed webOS media stack with Claude Code and Ghidra, builds a native Rust interface drawn on the GPU instead of in a web view, and hands video to the television own decoder silicon. No JavaScript, no Chromium and no web view sit in the path. The README ships real captures, not mockups, across library, shelves and playback.

Results

In daily use on a 2019 LG set, the profile picker loads in about 3 seconds where the official app took 30, playback runs at 60 frames per second, and the install guide and troubleshooting docs cover real sets. The site and forum thread record the independent project status; it is open source and not affiliated with Plex or LG.
