What was done

A fan project rebuilds Hitman: Contracts in Rust and Bevy one mission at a time, reading the original game files with format readers reverse engineered from a Ghidra decompilation; its commits are co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5.

abhinavt0681 is rebuilding Hitman: Contracts (IO Interactive, 2004) in Rust and Bevy, one mission at a time, starting with The Bjarkhov Bomb. It reads the level, models, textures, animations, sounds and music from the player's own copy, using format readers reverse engineered for the project. The repo's commits are co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5.

How it was done

The engine's behaviour, including the script VM, weapons and AI messages, was studied in a Ghidra decompilation of HitmanContracts.exe, and the repo includes a script that rebuilds that decompilation from your own copy in about three minutes. A dump tool turns the mission's level scripts into readable listings. The README describes a test mode where a scripted run saves a screenshot, which is also how AI assistants check what they changed, and an AGENTS.md file keeps working notes for contributors and their AI assistants.

Results

The whole C02-1 level loads from the original files with collision and navigation. 47 can walk, sneak, drag bodies and take disguises with the original animations, and the mission's objectives, briefing, weapons, ladders, dialogue scenes and guard reactions work. Running the original level scripts, the original guard logic and the other missions are still to come. No game content is shipped, and it has only been tested on Linux.
