What was done
A desktop companion for the GOG release of Ultima IV that monitors game state via DOSBox memory or save files to provide live tracking, mapping, and gameplay assistance. It includes an optional AI advisor and automated testing tools.
The ultima4-companion is a desktop application designed to run alongside the GOG release of Ultima IV in DOSBox. It functions by reading game data live from DOSBox memory or directly from save files to populate a dashboard, world map, journal, and dialogue explorer. The application provides features such as live battle tracking, quest progress monitoring, and spoiler-gated hints. It also includes a save editor and snapshot functionality.
Development is supported by a headless play-test driver and automated test instances that allow for verification without modifying the user's primary save files. Recent development, including the implementation of a spellbook view and game speed controls, has been co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5. An optional, user-configured AI advisor named Sage is available but remains disabled by default. The project relies on file format specifications from the xu4 project and memory layout documentation from u4-decompiled. Live memory features and the launcher are restricted to Windows 10 or 11, though parsers and tests are cross-platform compatible.
