What was done
Wolfenstein 3D already runs ten replaced functions verified against the original, and a differing routine found; agents work through Ghidra-backed context packets.
Recreate is a toolkit for AI agents that reimplements DOS games in Rust with verified behaviour. Fifteen of its recent commits list Claude co-authors, an MCP server plugs it into Claude Code, and telemetry tooling reads Claude Code session transcripts per task.
How it was done
The agent gets the game files and follows AGENTS.md. A deterministic Rust DOS host runs the original; its x86 CPU, VGA, Sound Blaster, OPL3, EMS and CD-ROM layers are ported and validated, and sessions are recorded so replay matches exactly. Ghidra imports give the agent function context in token-budget packets with names and evidence stored in a database. Replacements use a hybrid core with three modes: original, Rust, or dual, where both implementations run on the same snapshot and registers, memory and video are compared by calling convention.
Results
Wolfenstein 3D is the worked example: analysis found 777 functions in about six minutes, prior-art import recovered 1,622 functions Ghidra missed, and ten overrides including the drawing and palette routines are verified over a scripted walkthrough. Dual-run reported that the shipped VL_Hlin and VL_Bar differ from the released source. Synthetic test binaries with planted bugs are caught by the verifier.
