What was done

Glauber Lima used Claude Code with REA to disassemble the Windows 3.1 screensaver, recover its resource formats and script engine, and rewrite it in Rust.

Open Scrantic is a Rust reimplementation of Screen Antics: Johnny Castaway, the 1992 Sierra/Dynamix screensaver. Glauber Lima built it with Claude Code and the REA toolkit, and it now runs on Windows, macOS and Linux with the behaviour of the original.

How it was done

REA gave the model access to a disassembly and decompilation of the original SCRANTIC.SCR, a 16-bit Windows executable. The AI was used to recover the resource archive formats, the animation and scene script semantics, the story rules and the original random number generator, and then to write the Rust code, tests and documentation. The author directed the work, reviewed it and checked behaviour against the original. The disassembly is treated as ground truth, and the recovered formats and deliberate deviations are written up in docs/ENGINE.md.

Results

The repo ships MIT-licensed code and releases for three systems, with a 30-second demo video. It does not include the original art, scripts or sounds, so you need your own copy of the three original screensaver files, and the loader rejects other builds of the executable. The author discloses the AI use in the README.
