What was done
A Mac app that streams raw DV from a Panasonic camcorder over USB and encodes ProRes, where no macOS tool recognised the stream.
peperinho wanted to digitise MiniDV tapes on a Mac. The Panasonic NV-GS320 can stream raw DV over USB, which Windows picks up with a generic driver, but nothing on macOS did, not even Premiere Pro. The repo says it was built interactively with Claude Code, from the protocol work to the finished app.
How it was done
The camera exposes a standard USB video interface that includes a rarely used DV streaming format descriptor, and the app scans attached devices for that descriptor instead of hardcoding IDs. It negotiates the stream over USB and reads the DV frames directly.
Results
The app shows a live preview, captures the raw DV bit exact with embedded audio, and encodes ProRes 422 HQ. A failed encode keeps the raw capture. A .dmg is on the releases page, but the app is not notarised. It is confirmed only on the NV-GS320, though other cameras with the same descriptor should work.
