Started a full recompile of Gears of War 3 (Xbox 360) for Linux, with AI help

What was done

GloriousEggroll work in progress recompiles the game Xbox 360 code with the ReXGlue SDK and rebuilds the Xenos graphics backend through a decompiled source base rather than an emulator translator. A playable 4K work in progress is shown.

GloriousEggroll, known for Proton-GE, is recompiling Gears of War 3 from the Xbox 360 disc for native Linux, using AI as an effective tool for the work. It is a work in progress shown in a video: more than playable, but with combat frame drops that still need fixing. The port reuses a decompiled GPU backend as a base instead of taking an emulator translated graphics path, which the author says is the difference between a full recompile and a wrapped one.

How it was done

The ReXGlue SDK, a static recompiler that reads default.xex from your own ISO and translates each PowerPC instruction into portable C++ compiled into an x86-64 Linux binary, does the main work, crediting the Xenia kernel and system services and XenonRecomp for instruction translation. Shaders rebuild through XenosRecomp, from the Unleashed Recompiled team, converting Xbox 360 shader binaries to HLSL that DXC then compiles to SPIR-V for Vulkan, with plume, the graphics layer from RT64, as the renderer. The author clarifies no Unreal Engine 3 source was involved: the result is a mechanical translation of machine code, not readable source, and the graphics backend is decompiled rather than recovered.

Results

The current work in progress renders at 4K with no upscaler and stays playable, and its combat frame drops are the remaining fight. The 4K rendering and the backend work show how much of a difference a recompiled graphics path makes against a translator, which the author explains in the posts.
