What was done
iX500 Scan is a macOS application providing an alternative to the unmaintained ScanSnap Home software. It supports Wi-Fi scanning via a reverse-engineered VENS protocol and USB scanning via SANE, featuring automated PDF processing and OCR capabilities.
iX500 Scan is a macOS client developed to replace the unmaintained ScanSnap Home software for the Fujitsu/PFU ScanSnap iX500. The project implements Wi-Fi scanning by extending the reverse-engineered VENS protocol from bramheerink/scansnap, adding macOS support, HostID handling, and local time synchronization. USB scanning is supported via SANE. The application includes a SwiftUI interface that detects the physical scan button on the device. The processing pipeline produces searchable PDFs by applying rotation, cropping, blank page removal, and OCR via ocrmypdf. The author reports that Wi-Fi scans are consistently received as color, 300 dpi, 180° rotated images. The project requires a one-time extraction of a coupling key and HostID from a network capture of the official ScanSnap Home software. Development was co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5.
Reproduce it
Install dependencies via Homebrew: `brew install sane-backends ocrmypdf img2pdf tesseract-lang`. Use `tcpdump` to capture the handshake between the scanner and ScanSnap Home, then run `extract_key.py` to generate the required configuration files. Build the app using `app/build.sh` with Xcode 15+.
