What was done
VinceIP statically recompiled the original Xbox Far Cry Instincts into a Windows program with a DirectX 12 renderer. Story mode and the map editor work, built with extensive help from Claude.
fci-recomp is a native Windows port of Far Cry Instincts (2005, original Xbox). The game's code is translated to C ahead of time from your own disc image and compiled into a Windows program. VinceIP says the project used extensive AI assistance with a human reviewing the code, and the commits are co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code.
How it was done
The port builds on a modified version of Xbox XBE Recomp tailored to this game. The translated code runs beside a reimplementation of the Xbox kernel, Direct3D and audio, drawn through a DirectX 12 renderer. A script takes the disc image, downloads the Python and Microsoft compiler runtimes it needs, recompiles the game and builds it, which takes 15 to 25 minutes.
Results
Version 0.1.1 runs single-player story mode and the map editor, with saving and loading of custom maps and story progress. It adds mouse and keyboard controls, widescreen, higher internal resolution, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion and longer draw distances. Known issues include flickering dynamic lights, a 30 fps cap, possible memory problems when switching to the editor, and Xbox Live and system link not working. The repository holds no game code or assets.
