The redguard-preservation project reverse-engineers the file formats and engine of The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. It provides a CLI tool and Rust library for inspecting and converting game assets into open formats, alongside documented engine behavior.
The redguard-preservation project documents and provides tools to reverse-engineer the 1998 game The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. The project provides a command-line tool, rgpre, and a Rust library to inspect and convert game assets into open formats such as GLB, PNG, GIF, WAV, and JSON. The documentation covers file format specifications, engine behavior, and INI configuration references. The tools require a local installation of the game to function. The project has documented various engine mechanics, including movie unlock flags, sound channel behavior, and actor movement continuations. AI models, including Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Codex, have participated in documenting these engine behaviors and file structures, as credited in the project commit history. The save-game loader is read-only and does not restore actors or scripts into a running engine, and state payloads remain largely opaque. Further details are available at the published documentation.
Reproduce it
Install the CLI via cargo install redguard-preservation or build from source using cargo build. Use the rgpre command-line tool to scan directories, read file structures, or convert assets using commands like rgpre convert <FILE>.
