The project provides a 100% byte-matching decompilation of the Japanese Dreamcast release of Sonic Adventure. It includes a port to GCC 16.2, enabling features like 16:9 aspect ratio and 60 fps, developed using Claude Code and Codex.
The project sonic-adventure is a complete matching decompilation of the Japanese retail release of Sonic Adventure (HDR-0001, version 1.007). The author reports that 100% of the game's code builds from source, byte for byte, matching the original binaries. The codebase consists of approximately 1 million lines of C, which the author states were written using Claude Code and Codex. The build process requires the original disc data and utilizes Hitachi's SHC 5.0 compiler, run via wibo on Linux. Additionally, the project includes a port to GCC 16.2, which allows the game to compile under a modern toolchain. This GCC port incorporates the sh4zam library by Falco Girgis for hand-optimized SH-4 math routines and introduces features such as 16:9 widescreen support, 60 fps, a frame counter, and skips for movies and cutscenes. The matching build process verifies every binary against the original disc files, while the GCC port provides an alternative build path for modern systems.

Reproduce it
Ensure the Japanese release of Sonic Adventure (HDR-0001, version 1.007) is available. Place the disc files (1ST_READ.BIN, LOADER.BIN, and SONICADV/) in the orig/ directory. Run 'make' to perform the matching build or 'make gcc' to build the GCC port on an x86-64 Linux system with GNU make 4.3 and Python 3.8 installed.
