Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 (Nintendo DS): A decompilation turned into a native game, hour by hour.

What was done

A fan port for Apple Silicon first, with CI builds for Windows and Linux: it boots to the title screen with sound and is kept in sync with the decompilation.

Frigate is a native PC port of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, built from the pokebw2 matching decompilation. Every commit message in the port work carries Claude Opus 5.5 as co-author.

How it was done

The repository is the pokebw2 tree with its full commit history plus a port directory. A GitHub Action merges upstream changes every hour, and each port session is verified against both ROMs. No CPU emulator runs the game: the decompiled C is compiled to host machine code, and the ROM is only read as a data source you supply yourself. The DS display and sound come from host renderers on SDL3 and a host sound driver, so the game can draw at any resolution. Tests hold it frame by frame against melonDS, for graphics and for audio down to individual envelopes and levels.

Results

Boots through the logos, the title screen and the start menu with sound, and CONTINUE loads a save that stays interchangeable with melonDS up to the field. The bag, trainer card and Pokedex menu apps match melonDS pass for pass in both versions. The field engine is still stopped behind upstream decompilation of its overlay, and CI builds and tests Windows and Linux as well as macOS.
