What was done
kmdlswap is a tool that replaces geometry in KOTOR 1 mesh nodes while maintaining byte-identical output for unmodified data. It includes a GUI, kmdlfun, for building characters and transplanting models, with support for external glTF and Jade Empire assets.
kmdlswap is a tool designed to replace the geometry of a single mesh node within a vanilla KOTOR 1 model while keeping the remaining data byte-identical. The project includes a desktop application, kmdlfun, which provides a GUI for character creation, model transplantation, and previewing results. The engine performs coverage, offset-closure, and byte-identity checks to ensure model integrity. The author reports that all 2,832 MDL/MDX pairs in the vanilla install are accounted for with byte-identical re-emission. Milestone 2 verified 76,703 mesh nodes via no-op swaps, and Milestone 3 confirmed geometry replacement, including foreign FBX meshes, in-game. The tool also supports importing glTF files and Jade Empire models. Development involved iterative debugging, such as resolving floating head issues caused by skeleton height differences and fixing shoulder seam stretching by adjusting vertex weight assignment. The author notes that some initial assumptions, such as weight preservation on partitioned vertices, were incorrect and required testing on built output. The project is documented at kmdlswap.
Reproduce it
Download the kmdlfun 0.1.0 release. The application automatically detects KOTOR, KOTOR 2, and Jade Empire installations. For CLI usage, run the provided Python scripts in the repository, such as `python tools/corpus_check.py --install <path>` for validation.
