What was done
This project adapts the Super Mario Sunshine PC port to run on Xbox Series X/S via UWP. It uses ANGLE for graphics and was developed with heavy assistance from Claude, which authored the UWP shell, graphics layers, and build scripts.
The project creates a UWP build of the Super Mario Sunshine PC port for Xbox Series X and S consoles in Developer Mode. The port relies on the existing PC port codebase as a submodule, applying patches and an overlay to adapt it for the UWP environment. Graphics are rendered via OpenGL ES 3.0 through the ANGLE library on Direct3D 11. The author reports that the game runs from the intro to the title screen and into stages, with functional controller input, rumble, and sound. Performance varies, with menus running at 60 frames per second and gameplay reaching approximately 40 frames per second. Memory usage is a constraint; settings above 2x internal resolution or 3x without MSAA exceed the 1 GB memory limit reported by the console. Claude, an AI model, authored nearly all code, scripts, patches, and documentation, including the UWP shell, ANGLE graphics layer, shader translation, and XAudio2 layers. Commits are co-authored by Claude Sonnet 5.5. The project requires a user-provided disc image and is installed via the Xbox Device Portal. https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ikevik/sms-xbox-uwp/HEAD/README.md
Reproduce it
1. Clone the repository recursively. 2. Run scripts/prepare.sh to build the UWP tree. 3. Use Visual Studio UWP tools, LLVM clang, CMake, and Ninja to execute tools/ci/clang_survey.ps1 -Uwp. 4. Install the resulting VCLibs package and .msix file via the Xbox Device Portal. 5. Place a valid GMSE01 ISO as game.iso in the app's LocalState folder.
