An AI-assisted project aiming to provide a byte-matching C source decompilation and a static-recompiled PC port of Star Ocean: The Second Story for PlayStation.
The oceanic-stars-decomp project is an ongoing effort to create a byte-matching C source decompilation and a native PC port via static recompilation for the 1998 PlayStation title Star Ocean: The Second Story. The project is explicitly AI-assisted, with the maintainer reporting that Claude (Anthropic's AI) authored the code, scripts, and documentation, while the maintainer performs review and testing.
Methodologically, the project utilizes GCC 2.7.2-psx to achieve byte-matching results for the game's main overlay. As of October 2026, 460 functions have been matched, with 457 passing the project's internal rule checker. Current progress is limited to leaf, simple frame, call, and loop functions; more complex structures such as switch tables, .rodata, and larger frames remain untested. The project also includes an analysis of the SO2.BIN archive, including its SLZ compression and encrypted table of contents. While a recompilation track exists using psxrecomp, it has not yet been executed, and the necessary SLZ extraction method remains to be implemented. The project is currently non-playable.
