What was done

A fan-made decompilation of Freedom Planet targeting Dreamcast and PC, built using Claude Opus 5.5. The project utilizes original assets and debug symbols to achieve a 90% decompilation rate, with the remainder inferred.

The project provides a FOSS approximation of Freedom Planet, targeting the Sega Dreamcast and PC platforms. The author reports that the codebase is roughly 90% decompiled and 10% inferred, consisting of approximately 45.7k lines of C code. The development process relied on Claude Opus 5.5 for implementation, with the author performing play-testing and prompting. The project leverages external tools from the fp-assets repository and utilizes existing debug symbols. To fit the game within Dreamcast hardware constraints, the author implemented texture compression to 8-bit indexed color, LZ4 compression, and 4-bit ADPCM audio. The PC port, available on a separate branch, uses SDL2 for Windows and Linux. The builder script automatically processes the user-provided Assets.dat file from a retail copy of the game. While the majority of the code is recovered, 18 lines are marked as unknown. The author notes that the Dreamcast version maintains 60fps in most stages, though performance drops occur during scenes with multiple large interactive sprites.
