What was done
A community-led C reconstruction of the 1999 PC game Driver, enabling native execution on modern platforms via SDL2 and OpenGL, with full function porting and enhanced graphics support.
The project provides a reconstruction of the 1999 PC game Driver as C source code, derived from the original Game.exe. The README documents that all 3,292 non-CRT functions have been ported, with CRT functions replaced by libc and custom platform-specific code. The project supports two build targets: a native version using SDL2 and OpenGL 3.3, and a DINPUT.dll proxy hook for the original executable. The native build includes features such as MSAA, anisotropic filtering, and HD texture support. Commit messages from the project's history state that simulation and image output were verified as identical to the original for specific deterministic runs, such as Miami survival scenarios. While the project achieves functional parity for many game systems, including traffic, collisions, and pursuit logic, the README notes that night modes, cities other than Miami, and FMV cutscenes remain unverified or non-functional. The project uses Python-based tools for data table generation and Ghidra scripts for reference material. Further details are available at the official repository.
Reproduce it
Build the project using CMake on a supported platform (Linux arm64 verified). Run `./build-native/driver --data /path/to/game/data` to execute the native port. Use `ctest` within the build directory to run the included self-tests.
