This repository provides research, analysis tools, and a playable rebuild of Champions: Return to Arms. It features a translated native game and a Godot-hosted version, utilizing an evidence-based approach to document game systems, file formats, and online synchronization bugs.
The Open Champions project is an independent effort to preserve Champions: Return to Arms through reverse engineering and a playable rebuild. The repository documents the game's systems, file formats, and online bugs using an evidence ledger. The project includes tools to translate the original executable into C++ and a Godot-based host for the game. The research covers 7,732 MIPS functions, 403 C++ class names, and the complete level-script language. Online play is supported via a deterministic lockstep model, which can be toggled to remain byte-identical to the original game. Recent development includes support for up to eight players, GPU-timed quality governors, and various rendering fixes. The project relies on a methodology of honest naming and measured, incremental changes. AI models, specifically Claude Opus 5.5 and ChatGPT, are credited as co-authors on recent commits for tasks such as codex generation and code implementation. While the project achieves a playable state, it notes that certain configurations, such as mixed Godot and native Hardcore rooms, may exhibit drift.
Reproduce it
Users must provide their own US v2.00 disc image (SLUS-20973). Setup involves using provided Python tools to build the game on the local machine. Testing is performed via a CI workflow and custom Python scripts (e.g., tools/symtab.py, tools/doctor.py) that verify symbols and setup integrity without requiring game files.
