Project Helghast is a work-in-progress static recompilation of the PS3 game Killzone 3, translating PowerPC and SPU code to native Windows x64. It is currently in a partly playable state with known performance and audio limitations.
Project Helghast is an unofficial PC port of the 2011 PlayStation 3 title Killzone 3. The project utilizes static recompilation, where the game's PowerPC (PPU) and Cell SPU code are translated to C ahead of time and compiled into a native Windows x64 executable. This approach avoids CPU emulation during runtime. The project reimplements PS3 system software calls using PC APIs, while a runtime layer handles GPU command stream translation to Direct3D 12, SPU scheduling, and DMA reproduction. As of October 2026, the project is considered partly playable. Levels load and run at approximately 16-22 frames per second, with a target of 30 frames per second. While the campaign has not been completed in its entirety, the chapter 'Pyrrhus Outskirts' has been played to completion. Known limitations include occasional audio stuttering, as the mixing code is reportedly 1.2% short of real-time performance, and graphical artifacts where far-view windows and skies appear flat white. The renderer's command walker and SPU job code are identified as current performance bottlenecks. Further details are available at the project README.
