What was done
The author attempted to reverse engineer the Sony torne firmware using AI and Ghidra, but ultimately found that existing open-source solutions like coax rendered the manual effort unnecessary.
The author reports conducting an extensive investigation into the Sony torne hardware, including static analysis and real-world testing of the device's firmware. The research involved dumping the hardware's RAM, ROM, and hidden ROM, and attempting to resolve the device's key-handling mechanisms. The author documents using AI and LLMs in conjunction with Ghidra to assist in the reverse engineering process. While the author successfully mapped most of the key-handling, they reported that one specific key remained elusive, likely requiring USB MITM capture to resolve. The research was ultimately superseded by the discovery of an existing open-source implementation, coax, which allows for bare-mode operation without requiring the original firmware. The author notes that the manual analysis of the proprietary firmware was largely redundant for the goal of using the device on a PC.
