This project provides firmware for ESP32-S3 boards to bridge USB-only printers to wireless protocols like AirPrint and Mopria. The author reports using AI to assist in reverse-engineering and adapting printer drivers, with the Canon MG2550S confirmed as hardware-tested.
The ESP32-S3 USB-to-AirPrint project provides firmware that enables wireless printing and scanning for legacy USB-only printers. The system functions by converting print jobs on the ESP32-S3, eliminating the need for host-side printer drivers. The author, ngxson, reports that AI assistance has made the process of adapting drivers for different printer models trivial, noting that even closed-source drivers can be reverse-engineered for this purpose https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ngxson/esp32-usb-to-airprint/HEAD/README.md. While the firmware supports a variety of printer series, the project documentation distinguishes between models validated on real hardware, such as the Canon MG2550S, and those that are only expected to work. The author emphasizes that contributors must test drivers on actual hardware rather than relying solely on emulation. The project also includes optional support for an SSD1315 OLED screen and physical buttons for scanning and test page functions.

Reproduce it
Connect an ESP32-S3 to a computer via the COM port, configure the .env file with network credentials and printer settings, and flash using PlatformIO with 'pio run -t upload'. Connect the printer to the board's USB-OTG port.
