What was done

A preservation project recovering the unreleased 2000–2006 space-combat sim Ace of Angels. It provides tools for Windows gameplay and a reverse-engineered Linux server for LAN/VPN multiplayer, featuring map rotation and automated session management.

The Ace of Angels preservation project aims to recover and document the online 3D space-combat simulator developed by Flying Rock Enterprises between 2000 and 2006. Although the game never officially launched, the project has recovered six client builds. The author reports that the 2.9.2 client is playable on Windows 10/11 with necessary display and timing fixes. A stand-in server, developed through reverse engineering, enables multiplayer functionality over LAN or private VPN, supporting features such as scoreboards, power-ups, and 20 maps. The project includes an unattended Linux host service that manages map rotation, kill/time limits, and process recovery. The author notes that while two-PC combat has been verified, internet play remains unverified, and features like CTF rules, AI missions, and persistent pilot profiles are currently absent. The project documentation and tools were developed with the assistance of Claude Opus 5.5, which co-authored several commits related to repository infrastructure and feature implementation.
